ANZCO Farm Assurance Programme

ANZCO introduced a new industry standard farm assurance system in late 2017, reducing duplication and costs for farmers and providing even greater customer confidence in the New Zealand red meat supply system. NZFAP is accredited by JAS-ANZ, the joint government-appointed certification body responsible for accrediting Conformity Assessment Bodies like AsureQuality, and ensuring that auditing and inspection standards are being met.

Audits for the New Zealand Farm Assurance Programme (NZFAP) are carried out by AsureQuality. The NZFAP is being phased in during the next 15 months by ANZCO as farmers’ assurance accreditations expire and come up for renewal. For farmers who are already farm assured through ANZCO, there will be very little change in terms of what will occur the next time they are audited.


The new programme will enhance the already high customer confidence in the New Zealand supply chain. It will also eliminate duplication between processors because most processors are joining the programme.

The ultimate goal is to eventually have all sheep, beef and deer farmers involved in the NZFAP.


A farm assurance programme like NZFAP can  improve on-farm efficiency and ensure farmers produce healthier livestock, and therefore become more profitable. Food safety, traceability and quality assurance drives the NZFAP to help our farmers manage and achieve the approved high standards through checking farms, identifying animal health issues and record keeping. Therefore, adhering to the NZFAP allows a processor/exporter to maximise the customer eligibility of animal purchased.

The NZFAP has requirements in four main areas, each of which is verified as part of the accreditation and auditing process:

1. Food safety – food products must be free from dangers arising from biological, chemical and physical hazards.

2. Animal welfare – livestock are expected to have been raised in farming systems ensuring the five freedoms:

  • Freedom from thirst, hunger and malnutrition
  • The provision of appropriate comfort and shade
  • The prevention and/or rapid diagnosis and treatment of injury, disease or infection
  • Freedom from distress
  • The opportunity to display normal patterns of behaviour

NZ has national animal welfare standards which are included and exceeded within the NZFAP.

3. Environmental sustainability – livestock are expected to be raised in farm systems which are sustainable. NZ has national and regional standards for water quality and nutrient management.

4. Traceability – livestock must be able to be traced from processing right back through all stages of their lives to birth. This is mandatory in NZ.
